The New Criminal Code and Criminal Procedure Code are in effect, Yusril said 2026 is the beginning of a new phase of Indonesian law

JAKARTA - Coordinating Minister for Legal, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra said 2026 is an important milestone in the development of national law as the new Criminal Code (KUHP) and Code of Criminal Procedure (KUHAP) come into force.

This was conveyed by Yusril when he led a joint appeal in Jakarta, Monday, January 12, as confirmed in Jakarta, Wednesday, January 14.

"This is not just a change in regulation, but a major leap in efforts to realize a modern, just, and rooted in the values of the Indonesian nation's criminal justice system," said Yusril.

According to him, the success of the implementation of the new Criminal Code and Criminal Procedure Code is not only determined by the normative understanding of the rules, but also by changes in attitudes and ways of thinking of state apparatuses in enforcing the law.

Yusril emphasized that law enforcement in the future is no longer solely oriented towards punishment, but must prioritize substantive justice, usefulness, and balance between the interests of the state, society, and individuals.

In facing various challenges in the future, including natural disasters and social dynamics, Yusril appealed to all levels to maintain safety and health, strengthen cross-ministerial synergy without sectoral ego, and not easily provoked by misleading information.

He emphasized the importance of strengthening national legal reform, inter-ministerial solidarity, and the integrity of state apparatus as the main foundation of public confidence.

"Integrity is not just a slogan, but a value that must be reflected in every decision and every action," said Yusril.

Yusril also invited all state apparatus to enter 2026 with stronger principles, more solid cooperation, and better commitment in providing services to the community.

"We as state apparatus are the front line in maintaining the law, upholding humanity, and upholding justice," he said.

He assessed that the joint apple at the beginning of this year was not just a ceremonial activity, but a momentum of reflection and consolidation to unite the steps to face the challenges of 2026.

According to Yusril, 2025 is a period of full dynamics and marks one year of the Red and White Cabinet under the government of President Prabowo Subianto.

He appreciated all levels who were considered to have worked with dedication and responsibility in maintaining national stability, strengthening the rule of law, upholding human rights, and ensuring that the immigration and correctional systems run in an orderly and just manner.

"I express my appreciation to all levels who have worked with dedication, loyalty, and responsibility, even though they are faced with various limitations and pressure situations," said Yusril.
