Tamalanrea Police Chief, Kompol Muhammad Yusuf said investigators had officially named the lecturer as a suspect in the alleged criminal case of insult.

"The determination of the suspect was carried out after the investigators ensured that all criminal elements were met through a series of investigations and cases," he told reporters, Tuesday, January 13.

Yusuf explained that the handling of the case began with the collection of evidence and evidence at the investigation stage. From the results of the initial case title, investigators concluded that the alleged insult event met the elements of a crime and was worthy of being upgraded to the investigation stage.

"At the investigation stage, the investigators of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Tamalanrea Police Station again held a case to determine the party responsible legally. The results of the investigation case clearly establish the lecturer as a suspect. The person concerned was then officially examined in his capacity as a suspect," he said.

Kompol Yusuf emphasized that the determination of the suspect was based on valid evidence and in accordance with the provisions of the criminal procedure law. Currently, investigators are completing the case file as preparation for transfer to the public prosecutor (JPU).

However, before the case file is declared complete, investigators are still opening room for settlement through the restorative justice (RJ) mechanism. Investigators will call the victim or reporter and the suspect to meet at the Tamalanrea Police Station to find a possible peaceful settlement.

"The results of the meeting will determine whether the case will be stopped through restorative justice or continued to the prosecution stage," he continued.

For the suspect, investigators applied Article 315 of the Criminal Code or Article 436 of the New Criminal Code of 2023, with a maximum penalty of six months in prison or a Category II fine.

"Although the peaceful settlement room is open, the legal process continues and the determination of the suspect is a form of the police's commitment to upholding the law professionally and fairly," he said.
