JAKARTA - Iranian Foreign Minister (Menlu) Abbas Araghchi accused the United States and Israel of being involved in the 92 cities in Iran that killed hundreds of people.

Araghchi said Iranian authorities have evidence of the involvement of the US and Israel in the anti-government demonstrations that killed 544 people over several days.

"We have a large number of documents proving that the US and Israel are involved in terrorist activities in Iran in recent days," he said in a statement to foreign diplomats in Tehran on Monday, January 12, quoted by Tass.

The Iranian top diplomat added that former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo "also admitted that [Israeli intelligence agency] Mossad agents guided the terrorist movement together with the rioters."

"We will investigate this matter, but those whose statements contribute to the increase in casualties are responsible for this development," Araghchi continued.

"Western countries condemn our police compared to terrorists. They [the West] failed to condemn the genocide of more than 70,000 people in the Gaza Strip and the death of more than 1,000 Iranians at the hands of the US and Israel. Today, they support terrorists in Iran," he said.

This demonstration action started from a demonstration by traders in Tehran on December 29, 2025. They protested against the sharp decline in the value of the Iranian rial.

On December 30, student masses joined demonstrations that led to riots in many cities in Iran.

The peak of the riots occurred on Thursday, January 8 at night, when at least 13 civilians, including a three-year-old child, were killed by the rioters. The authorities also announced the deaths of 38 law enforcement officers.

Tehran's mayor, Alireza Zakani, said rioters had burned 25 mosques, and damaged 26 banks, three health centers, and ten government buildings, along with more than 100 fire trucks, buses, and ambulances.

Iranian authorities have designated the rioters as terrorists and accused Israel and the US of being involved in the peaceful demonstrations that led to the riots.

Citing Sky News, the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency reported that as many as 544 people were killed in bloody demonstrations in Iran.

The US-based media also said that more than 10,681 people had been arrested and transferred to prison.

Meanwhile, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported on Sunday, January 12, that as many as 109 Iranian security personnel were killed during the bloody demonstrations.
