DONGGALA - Flash floods hit a number of areas in Donggala Regency, Central Sulawesi, due to high rainfall that has hit the area in recent times. The overflow of the river caused flooding to enter the residents' settlements and disrupt access to the main road.

Acting Head of the Central Sulawesi Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) Asbudianto said that flooding hit Banawa Tengah and Rio Pakava sub-districts after heavy rain significantly increased the river's discharge.

"Based on the field team's report, floods also hit Limboro Banawa Tengah Village and Pantolobete Village, Lalundu Village 1, Rio Mukti, Panca Mukti, Bonemarawa, Mbulawa, Ngovi, Pakava, and Polanto Jaya Village 4 in Rio Pakava District," said Asbudianto as quoted by Antara, Monday, January 12.

In the Central Banawa District, flooding submerged at least 10 residents' houses and flooded the Trans Sulawesi Road. Although the water has gradually receded, BPBD considers it necessary to normalize the river to prevent flooding from recurring when it rains again.

"Currently the water has receded, but the normalization of the river is very needed so that similar incidents do not recur," said Asbudianto.

Meanwhile, flooding in the Rio Pakava District caused a puddle on the main road of Lalundu Village which hindered the activities of residents. BPBD assessed that improving the drainage system was an urgent need in the area.

"For Rio Pakava, the main need is the improvement of drainage channels, especially on the main road of Lalundu Village," he said.

In addition to Banawa Tengah and Rio Pakava, flooding was also reported in at least 11 other villages, including Wani 1, Wani 2, Wani 3, and Wani Lumbumpetigo in Tanantovea District; Amal Dusun Maliko, Toaya, Kumbasa, Enu, Lero, and Sumari villages in Sindue District; and Labuan Toposo Village, Sisere Village in Labuan District.

The Regent of Donggala Vera Elena Laruni said that his party had instructed the local BPBD to lower heavy equipment to clean up the remaining flood materials in the affected areas.

"Since yesterday, the BPBD has been down to conduct data collection on damage to residents' homes and public facilities," said Vera.

He added, today he and the relevant regional device organizations conducted a direct review of the flood location in Wani Village, Tanantovea and Sindue Districts, as well as distributing assistance to affected residents.
