JAKARTA - Minister of Public Works (PU) Dody Hanggodo plans to build a dam in a number of upstream areas after the recent flooding in Sumatra in late November 2025.
The plan is for the construction of the sabo dam to be carried out in the Gayo Lues area (Aceh Province) and Agam (West Sumatra).
According to Dody, this is necessary because recently the Gayo Lues area experienced landslides after being hit by heavy rain.
"Actually we were late because as Mr. Tito (Home Minister) said, Gayo Lues is upstream, so yesterday I had to rush to Gayo Lues because when the road collapsed I was quite surprised why it could collapse," said Dody in a Coordination Meeting (Rakor) of the DPR RI Disaster Recovery Task Force with the Government, monitored online on YouTube TV Parliament, Saturday, January 10.
"Finally I know that it needs sabotage dam there," he continued.
Not only in Gayo Lues, said Dody, his party plans to build a dam dam in Agam Regency, West Sumatra (Sumbar).
"Sabo dams will not only be built in Gayo Lues, but also in several other places in Agam," he said.
Hopefully, Dody said, in the future in these areas there will be no more landslides when it rains heavily.
"So the hope is that in the future, when there is heavy rain, mud, sediment and wood can be held upstream. So, the lower areas such as Aceh Tamiang and so on can be safe," said Dody.
With the planned construction of the sabo dam, continued Dody, additional funds of up to Rp74 trillion are needed from the original infrastructure recovery budget in the three affected provinces of Rp51 trillion.
"That's why our budget will increase slightly from the original Rp. 51 trillion to almost Rp. 74 trillion, but I will discuss this with Mr. Tito," he added.
