Member of Commission V of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Irmawan, asked all parties to remain focused on handling victims of flooding and landslides that hit Aceh, West Sumatra, and North Sumatra.
This was said by Irmawan in response to the alleged sabotage of the Bailey bridge in Aceh.
He appealed that there should be no provocations that could potentially disrupt security and order after the disaster.
"We are concerned if the alleged sabotage of the Bailey bridge is true. However, we hope that this issue will not spread and hinder the main focus, namely handling disaster victims. All parties are asked to remain focused and avoid provocation," Irmawan told reporters, Tuesday, December 30.
The PKB legislator from the Aceh District emphasized that post-disaster handling and recovery must be the top priority for all parties. According to him, recovery efforts need to be carried out immediately so that the victims can return to a better life.
"Currently, there are still many problems faced by the victims, ranging from housing to meeting basic needs. Not to mention the damage to various basic infrastructure. Therefore, all parties must maintain the focus of handling so that the rehabilitation phase runs well," said Irmawan.
He also emphasized that based on data on the dashboard for handling emergency flood and landslides in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra as of Tuesday, December 30, a total of 1,140 people died and 163 people were still reported missing.
In addition, he continued, around 399 thousand people were forced to evacuate due to disasters that occurred in the past month. The data also recorded damage to 3,188 educational facilities, 90 bridges were cut off, 803 houses of worship were damaged, and 215 health facilities were affected.
"Until now, the victims still need a lot of help. Many residents have not been able to return home because they are covered with thick mud, while thousands of houses have been severely damaged and are uninhabitable," said Irmawan.
In addition to medical assistance, food, drinks, and clean water, Irmawan also emphasized that vulnerable groups such as children, women, and the elderly still need special assistance, including milk, sanitary pads, and baby diapers.
"The main priority is the needs of disaster victims in Sumatra. Recovery takes time and joint work so that they can immediately rise and reorganize their lives in the future," said Irmawan.
Previously, the Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Army (KSAD) General Maruli Simajuntak said that soldiers found a number of bailey bridge bolts that were removed by unknown people on Sunday, December 28.
The Bailey bridge is an emergency access for residents who are isolated due to disasters.
