JAKARTA - President Vladimir Putin told US President Donald Trump on Monday that Russia would review its position in peace negotiations after what Moscow said was a Ukrainian drone attack on the Russian President's residence, the Kremlin said.
Kremlin Foreign Policy Aide Yuri Ushakov said President Putin and President Trump spoke on Monday and the Kremlin leader was briefed by the White House leader and his senior advisers on Washington's negotiations with Ukraine.
"According to the Americans, during these negotiations the Americans aggressively pursued the idea of Kyiv taking real steps towards a final settlement of the conflict, not hiding behind temporary ceasefire demands," Ushakov told reporters at a press conference by telephone, reported Al Arabiya (30/12).
Ushakov said that the Russians were concerned that the idea put forward by Ukraine to the Americans could still be interpreted too broadly by Kyiv.
"President Trump was surprised when President Putin told him that Ukraine had attacked the presidential residence in Novgorod," Ushakov said.
"Russia's position will be reviewed based on a number of agreements reached at the previous stage and based on emerging information exchanges," Ushakov said.
"This has been stated very clearly," he said.
Ukraine itself has rejected Russia's accusations that 91 drones attacked President Putin's residence in northern Russia as a lie, accusing Moscow - which has not provided evidence to support its claim - of trying to undermine peace talks.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky earlier said that Ukraine's claim of an attack on Putin's residence was "a completely fabricated story intended to justify additional attacks on Ukraine, including Kyiv, as well as Russia's own refusal to take the necessary steps to end the war."
Separately, the White House said President Trump had a "positive" phone call with President Putin on Monday, a day after President Trump met with President Zelensky in Florida.
"President Trump has completed a positive phone call with President Putin regarding Ukraine," Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on X.
Previously, the US and Russian presidents had also spoken of a Sunday meeting.
Leavitt's statement came shortly after Moscow accused Kyiv of firing a drone into Putin's residence and announced they would "revise" their negotiating position on the end of the Ukrainian war.
