JAKARTA - President Donald Trump said on Sunday that there has been significant progress in efforts to end Russia's war with Ukraine.
The US President said this after receiving President Volodymyr Zelensky at the Mar-a-Lago resort, Florida, USA.
"We have discussed, maybe we can say 95 percent. I don't know what percentage it is, but we have made a lot of progress in ending that war, which is really the deadliest war since World War II, maybe the biggest war since World War II," he said, launching Anadolu (29/12).
President Trump said. the remaining parts of the peace plan could be agreed upon in "a few weeks" if the work goes "very well."
He said one or two "very tricky issues" remained in efforts to end the war, with one issue relating to land that had been seized during the conflict.
President Trump also said he discussed post-war reconstruction of Ukraine with Russian President Vladimir Putin, adding that Moscow would help, "including supplying energy, electricity, and other things at very low prices."
"Russia wants to see Ukraine succeed. President Putin is very generous in his feelings about Ukraine's success," he said.
The Republican president expressed his readiness to give a speech in the Ukrainian parliament to help advance the peace process.
"If it can help save 25,000 lives per month, I'm certainly willing to do it," he said.
President Trump added that a trilateral meeting between himself, Putin, and Zelensky could take place at the right time.
"I see it will happen at the right time," he said.
Asked about security guarantees for Ukraine, Trump said: "We want to work with Europe, and Europe will take over most of the role," adding that Washington would help Europe.
Asked if President Putin agreed to a ceasefire to allow for a referendum in Ukraine, President Trump said President Putin was against a temporary cessation of hostilities only to potentially start it again.
"I think we're finding ways to deal with that," he added.
