JAKARTA - The Tambora National Park Office closed all climbing routes to Mount Tambora on Sumbawa Island, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).

The head of the Tambora National Park Office, Abdul Aziz Bakri, said the closure of the climbing route to Mount Tambora was temporary for the sake of mutual safety and to maintain sustainable nature.

"The climbing tourism activity in the Tambora National Park is temporarily closed," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Friday.

The closure of this climbing route, which will take effect from December 28, 2025 until an undetermined time, covers all climbing routes and activities.

"This step is taken to ensure the safety of visitors, guides, porters, and field officers, as well as provide space for the Tambora ecosystem and biodiversity to recover naturally," said Aziz.

For information on reopening the climb, his party will convey it through an official announcement from the Tambora National Park Office after the weather conditions are declared safe.

It is known that Mount Tambora National Park is administratively located in Bima Regency and Dompu Regency, NTB.

Among the main tourist attractions is the caldera which is at an altitude of 2,850 meters above sea level. The Tambora caldera was formed from a massive eruption in 1815 which reached a scale of seven VEI (Volcanic Explosivity Index)

According to experts, the eruption is the largest volcanic eruption since the Taupo eruption in 181. Tambora was designated as a National Geopark on November 20, 2017 by the National Committee for Indonesian Geoparks, the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia.
