JAKARTA - The Ministry of Environment (KLH) targets the environmental impact assessment in the affected areas of the Sumatra disaster to be completed by March 2026.

Minister of Environment (LH) Hanif Faisol Nurofiq said that the environmental evaluation was carried out in three stages, namely rapid assessment, evaluation of the suitability of the Strategic Environmental Assessment (KLHS) implementation, and environmental audit evaluation.

He said that this evaluation was carried out by multisectors, including involving experts and lecturers under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemdiktisaintek).

"So, these three stages we will arrange within three months from now, it must be completed. The strategic environmental study that will evaluate the spatial layout will be completed with the Ministry of Education and Technology, at least in March this must be completed," said Minister of LH Hanif as reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, December 23.

Minister Hanif emphasized that this evaluation is important to reduce the potential for disasters that could occur when housing has been built.

In the rapid assessment stage, he continued, the process is in the form of determining the suitability of the location by KLH together with experts in their fields, then urban and residential planning which is also carried out together with the Indonesian Planning Experts Association.

"Then, if it is appropriate, we will compare the spatial layout of the provincial areas in the three provinces with the actual situation on the ground to see the problems in order to increase the capacity of our environment," said Minister of LH Hanif.

Then, he continued, one of the things done in the environmental audit stage is to check various environmental permits, both the Environmental Impact Analysis (Amdal) and Environmental Management Efforts and Environmental Monitoring Efforts (UKL-UPL).

"So for Amdal and UKL-UPL based on land and coal mining extraction, this will be evaluated. The evaluation will be carried out very quickly and carefully through environmental audits. Environmental audits are currently underway, especially in North Sumatra," he said.

"This environmental audit will provide a detailed overview of what happened and what should have been avoided. Thus, this environmental audit will be carried out in more than 100 business units in North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Aceh," said Minister of LH Hanif Faisol Nurofiq.
