JAKARTA - The Chairman of the PDIP Election Victory Division, Deddy Yevri Siitorus, said his party rejected the idea of holding regional head elections (Pilkada) through the Regional Representative Council (DPRD).

Deddy emphasized that PDIP chose to protect the people's right to be able to choose leaders directly.

"We will try to protect the people's right to directly choose their leaders," said Deddy, Monday, December 22.

"Because what is left of the people is only their voice, that is once every five years. If that is also taken away, we will be in a mess," he continued.

Even so, the member of Commission II of the DPR said that the proposal for the Election of the Regional Representative Council (Pilkada) through the DPRD, which was echoed by PKB and Golkar, was still a discourse. He said that the proposal had not been discussed by the DPR, especially regarding the discussion of the revision of the Election Law.

"It has not been discussed in Baleg or in the commission. So it's just a throwaway issue, we can't say what it will be like later," he said.

Deddy said PDIP was still studying the proposal. Even so, many grassroots still want the candidate for regional head to be directly chosen by the people.

"We are also still studying in the party, but from the grassroots we hear that they still want it to be directly chosen by the people," he said.

Previously, the 2025 I National Leadership Meeting (Rapimnas) of the Golkar Party produced a number of recommendations, one of which was that the Regional Head Election (Pilkada) was chosen through the Regional Representative Council (DPRD).

Golkar Party Chairman Bahlil Lahadalia said the recommendation was conveyed as a form of implementation of people's sovereignty, with emphasis on public involvement and participation in the implementation process.

"Golkar Party proposes the Regional Head Election through the Regional Representative Council," said Bahlil, Sunday, December 21.

The proposal was also conveyed by the Chairman of the PKB, Muhaimin Iskandar (Cak Imin) in front of President Prabowo Subianto at the 27th anniversary of the PKB at the Jakarta Convention Center on July 23, 2025.

Cak Imin proposed two patterns in the election of regional heads. First, the governor becomes the representative of the central government in the area directly appointed by the president. Second, the regional head at the level of regent or mayor is chosen by the people through the district and city DPRD.

The Coordinating Minister for Social Empowerment believes that changing the election system will create a conducive climate for accelerating national development. According to Cak Imin, the election directly costs irrational costs and makes local governments still dependent on the central government in all aspects, not yet independent or autonomous.
