SAMPIT - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) of East Kotawaringin Regency (Kotim), Central Kalimantan, urges fishermen to be aware of the potential for high waves in local sea waters in the next few days.

Head of the Haji Asan Meteorological Station of East Kotawaringin, Mulyono Leo Nardo, said that weather forecasts showed that sea waves in the waters of the south of Central Kalimantan could reach a height of around 1.5 meters.

"For large vessels such as RoRo ships, ferries, and other large ships are still safe, but for fishing boats we urge them to be more vigilant," said Mulyono in Sampit, Antara, Friday, December 19.

He explained that the wave with a height of 2.5 meters was relatively not significantly affected by large ships such as passenger and cargo ships operated by PT Pelni and PT Dharma Lautan Utama, especially ahead of Christmas and New Year celebrations.

However, this condition is considered quite dangerous for fishing boats and small-sized boats. According to Mulyono, waves as high as 1.5 meters have the potential to cause small boats to overturn and sink if they are not anticipated properly.

"Fishermen are asked to increase vigilance and not force themselves to sail if the weather at sea shows signs of deterioration or extreme," he said.

In addition, the Kotim BMKG also routinely conveys information related to the tides of the Mentaya River. This information is intended as a reference for large ships that will enter and exit the port to avoid the risk of sinking.

"High tide conditions tend to occur at night, especially towards midnight. For existing ship schedules, there is a possibility of a small shift because the tide pattern is expected to still occur at that time in the next few weeks," said Mulyono.

He added that BMKG continues to coordinate with related parties in facing the Christmas and New Year homecoming and return flows. BMKG ensures that weather forecast information, sea waves, and tides are continuously updated and accessible to the public.
