JAKARTA - The Borobudur Authority (BOB) predicts that the number of tourists visiting Borobudur Temple in Magelang, Central Java, during the 2026 New Year holiday will reach around 30,000 people.
BOB President Director Agustin Peranginangin said that the prediction refers to the pattern of tourist visits to Borobudur Temple which is relatively stable every moment of the new year.
"Those who stop by Borobudur usually in the new year are not less than 30,000 visitors," said Agustin as reported by ANTARA, Wednesday, December 17.
According to Agustin, this number has taken into account the capacity of managing the Borobudur Temple area, which is currently being applied to maintain visitor comfort as well as the sustainability of the world heritage site.
Currently, he said, the number of tourists allowed to climb the temple structure is limited to around 400-450 people per unit of time.
Agustin explained that previously the capacity of visiting the temple was in the range of 1,150 to 1,200 people per unit of time before adjustments were made to the management of the area.
"Now Borobudur has started to repair in the looser sense of the word than before, a maximum of 1,200 or 1,150 people per unit of time," he said.
In addition to capacity management, BOB also considers that there is still a perception in the community regarding the high cost of tickets to Borobudur Temple, so it becomes a homework to restore the image of the tourist destination.
"Indeed, Borobudur needs to restore its image, the first of which is that people think it costs Rp1 million (rate) for the ticket. In fact, it doesn't," he said.
At the end of the year, continued Agustin, a number of tourist activities, including on New Year's Eve, were also held in the Borobudur area.
On the other hand, BOB is also aware of the potential for traffic density around the Borobudur area, especially on relatively narrow road access. This condition is considered potentially disruptive to the activities of residents if the flow of tourists is too concentrated in one point.
