KJRI Sydney Urges Indonesian Citizens to be Alert after Mass Shooting in Australia

JAKARTA - The Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia (KJRI) in Sydney has urged Indonesian citizens (WNI) who are in Australia to remain vigilant following the mass shooting incident in the Bondi Beach area, Sydney, New South Wales, Sunday, December 14.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) together with the Indonesian Consulate General in Sydney stated that they would continue to monitor the development of the situation after the incident and maintain close coordination with local authorities to obtain the latest information.

"The Indonesian Consulate General in Sydney urges Indonesian citizens in the New South Wales region to remain vigilant, avoid the scene, and follow the instructions of the Australian authorities," said a written statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs which was confirmed in Jakarta, quoted from Antara on Monday, December 15.

The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that, until now, there has been no official information mentioning that Indonesian citizens were victims in the incident. Australian authorities have also not released data on the citizenship of the victims who died or were injured.

For Indonesian citizens who need assistance or have information related to the incident, the KJRI Sydney opened an emergency service that can be contacted via the number [phone].

Based on the Australian police report quoted by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) broadcast, at least 10 people died and 29 others were injured due to the mass shooting.

Police confirmed that of the 10 victims who died, nine of them were civilians, while the other one was the shooter.

Of the total number of injured victims, some of them were police officers who were the first responders at the scene. The security apparatus is still conducting intensive handling to ensure that the situation is really safe.

The New South Wales (NSW) State Police said two people had been secured around Bondi Beach. However, security operations are still underway and residents are asked to stay away from the location because a sterile zone has been imposed in the area of the incident.

Authorities also revealed the existence of a bomb threat around the coastal area. Security officers are working to disable an improvised explosive device (IED) that has been identified at the location.

The shooting incident was reported to have occurred in the northern part of Bondi Beach, near or in the area of Bondi Park Playground. This incident coincided with the first day of Hanukkah celebrations, an eight-day Jewish celebration, when the "Chanukah by the Sea" event was scheduled to take place in the area.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the incident in Bondi was a very shocking and disturbing event. He expressed his deepest condolences to the victims and their families.

Until now, Australian authorities are still conducting in-depth investigations regarding the motives and chronology of the shooting, while security has been tightened to ensure public safety.
