A total of 39 public kitchens established by the Ministry of Social Affairs (Kemensos) in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra, spend Rp2 billion every day to meet the needs of refugees victims of floods and landslides.

Minister of Social Affairs (Mensos) Saifullah Yusuf said the 39 kitchens were established in strategic locations and were close to the supply of raw materials that were easily accessible.

"The kitchens that we have established are collaborating with the local Social Service and the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), some are working with the community. This means that the public kitchen was established independently by the community, we are helping with the raw materials," said Social Minister Saifullah Yusuf as quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, December 9.

The Minister of Social Affairs explained that the 39 kitchens were able to produce 420,000 servings of food per day to serve food needs three times a day for the refugees.

In addition to public kitchens, the Ministry of Social Affairs also spends the needed needs according to their abilities, especially logistical goods for daily needs in collaboration with the TNI, Polri, and the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).

"So this (public kitchen) has been going on for the past week. The number has also gone up and down for the portion, because some can return home, but some have actually increased. This is indeed very dynamic in the field, the conditions are still isolated, difficult to access, but with hard work and working together, there has been recovery," said the Minister of Social Affairs.

The Ministry of Social Affairs has also involved 648 Disaster Preparedness Cadets (Tagana) in the three provinces, especially to help in these public kitchens.

"They are there to shop for raw materials, deliver, consolidate, coordinate, as well as for cooking. At some points we have also organized psychosocial services," said the Minister of Social Affairs.
