YOGYAKARTA - The Regional Government of the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) sent 842 kilograms of medicines and medical supplies to support the handling of flood victims in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.

The aid truck worth around Rp. 96 million was released by the Deputy Governor of Yogyakarta KGPAA Paku Alam X in the Kepatihan courtyard, Yogyakarta, Monday, December 8.

"This medical aid and medical supplies are to support basic health services, which there are quite a lot of disorders, and some are paralyzed," said Head of the DIY Health Service, Gregorius Anung Trihadi, quoted from Antara.

The assistance, said Anung, contains essential drugs for basic health services, including masks, fever reduction drugs, pain relievers, itching drugs, cough medicine, and multivitamins.

According to Anung, some assistance had actually been dispatched through Muhammadiyah Disaster Management Center (MDMC) volunteers, including 52 kilograms (kg) of medicines that were previously deposited.

He said the total aid was divided into three provinces covering 254 kg for North Sumatra, 316 kg for Aceh, and 262 kg for West Sumatra.

Anung emphasized that all the drugs sent came from "buffer stock" or backup supplies, while DIY supplies were still safe for local needs.

"So, don't worry, the DIY people that we provide are 'buffer stock' which is safe to be given to people in Sumatra who are affected by the disaster," he said.

For distribution, all assistance will be addressed to the health offices of Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra because they are better aware of the areas most needed.

If at any time necessary, Anung continued, the DIY Regional Government will also prepare health workers from the Emergency Medical Team and the health reserve team who have stated readiness.

"We have communicated internally that quite a lot are ready, but are still waiting for directions based on assessments in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra," he said.

Deputy Governor of Yogyakarta KGPAA Paku Alam X advised all volunteers on duty in the disaster area to maintain their health.

"Keep the spirit and we in Yogyakarta also pray for you to stay healthy. Because health is the main thing to carry out humanitarian tasks," said Paku Alam.

He also conveyed prayers for transmigrants and residents from DIY who live in affected areas to be given courage to face disasters.

"We both pray. Because this is a test for all, no one expects an incident like this and it becomes a lesson for all of us," he said.
