JAKARTA - Israeli Chief of Staff Defense Forces (IDF) Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir praised the new director of the Israeli intelligence agency, Mossad, as a brave and experienced officer he has known for a long time.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appointed Major General Roman Gofman, who now serves as the Prime Minister's Military Secretary, as Mossad's next Director, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said.

The Israeli military said in a statement that Lieutenant General Zamir met with Major General Roman on Thursday, after being announced as the new director of the Israeli intelligence agency.

The IDF said at the meeting Lieutenant General Zamir "emphasizing cooperation between organizations is important for national security, and that the IDF will support him and help according to his needs so that he can carry out his role successfully," reported The Times of Israel (5/12).

"I welcome the decision to appoint Major General Roman Gofman as Director of Mossad. Roman and I have known each other for years, from various roles in the Armored Corps to the positions he has held in recent years," Lieutenant General Zamir said in a statement delivered by the IDF.

"Roman is an officer who is brave, professional, and experienced. I am sure he will carry out his role very successfully in facing the challenges facing the State of Israel. IDF, and I personally, will assist him in the process of handing over positions so that he can occupy his position successfully," he recalled.

As previously reported, the current Director of Mossad, David Barnea, will end his five-year term in June 2026. According to Channel 12, Gofman's election means he managed to outperform two other candidates proposed by Barnea.

"Gofman is a very honorable officer," PMO said in a statement.

His appointment as prime minister's military secretary in the midst of the war proves he has extraordinary professional abilities, ranging from his rapid entry into the role to his direct and significant involvement in seven war arenas.

PMO stated, Gofman "maintains continued coordination with all intelligence and security agencies, especially Mossad."

Netanyahu's office praised Gofman's "creativity, initiative, intention, in-depth knowledge of enemy, full wisdom and strict secrecy".

"The Prime Minister believes that Major General Gofman is the most qualified and appropriate candidate to serve as director of Mossad and wishes him great success in this important role," the Prime Minister's Office said.
