Wood Scattered In West Sumatra Floods, Deputy Chief Of Police Calls The Investigation Team For Illegal Development Activities Has Been Formed

Deputy Chief of the Indonesian National Police (Wakapolri) Komjen Dedi Prasetyo ensured that a special team to investigate allegations of illegal logging practices in the West Sumatra (West Sumatra) region had been officially formed.

This assurance was conveyed by Dedi when he visited the Ante Mortem Command Post of the West Sumatra Police at Bhayangkara Hospital, Padang, Thursday, December 4.

"Bareskrim has formed a team, later it will collaborate with the West Sumatra Police," said Dedi Prasetyo, who was accompanied by the Deputy Chief of the West Sumatra Police, Brigadier General Solihin, quoted from Antara.

The joint team will conduct a thorough investigation into illegal activities that are suspected to take place in the upstream area.

The practice of illegal logging has returned to the public spotlight after flash floods hit Padang some time ago. When the disaster occurred, the flow of cloudy water brought mud, wood, and tree trunk materials that were thought to have come from damaged forest areas.

Dedi emphasized that the Police did not remain silent on the emergence of alleged environmental destruction activities behind the disaster.

Previously, Chairman of Commission IV of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Siti Hediati Hariyadi or Titiek Soeharto, also highlighted the practice of illegal logging during a visit to Padang on November 30. He emphasized that every illegal activity that destroys nature and the ecosystem must be eradicated.

"If there are illegal logging or mining activities in the upstream area, all of them must be brought under control because of their impact on the wider community downstream," said Titiek.

He also requested that all activities in the upstream area that have a permit but are proven to damage the environment can be canceled.

“Dengan curah hujan seperti sekarang saja dampaknya sudah seperti ini, apalagi jika curah hujan lebih besar,” kata dia.
