JAKARTA - The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia (KBRI) Phnom Penh strengthened efforts to protect Indonesian citizens (WNI) in Cambodia by visiting the Takhmao Penitentiary in Kandal Province to monitor the condition of detainees and distribute logistical assistance.

The Indonesian Ambassador to Cambodia, Santo Darmosumarto, said the visit was made to ensure the condition of Indonesian citizens who are undergoing legal proceedings while meeting their basic needs.

"Protections continue to be given to Indonesian citizens who are undergoing legal proceedings. This is the commitment of the Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh," he said in a press statement received in Jakarta, Antara, Wednesday, November 26.

During the visit, representatives of the Indonesian Embassy met with 17 Indonesian citizens who were detained. Four of them are still undergoing trial, one each related to drug possession cases and three others suspected of being involved in violence against fellow Indonesian citizens, following the case of 110 former Indonesian citizens of online fraud syndicates in Chrey Thum on October 17, 2025.

In general, the condition of Indonesian citizens is reported to be good, although some have complained about the cleaning facilities in prisons. Following up on this, the Indonesian Embassy distributed logistical assistance in the form of toiletries, medicines, and instant foods.

The Indonesian Embassy in Phnom Penh emphasized that prison visits are part of a sustainable effort to ensure that all Indonesian citizens in Cambodia continue to receive attention, assistance, and support according to the mandate of protecting the country.
