Premier League Contribution To UK Economy Reaches IDR 215.6 Trillion

JAKARTA - Research results from Ernst & Young (EY) show that the contribution of the 2023/2024 Premier League to Great Britain (UK) season reached 9.8 billion pounds sterling (around Rp215.6 trillion), up 21 percent since the 2021/2022 season and 14 times higher than the 1998/1999 season.

"This league generates significant economic value for the United Kingdom and promotes the country's positive image globally," said British League CEO Richard Masters, quoted from the Premier League website as reported by ANTARA, Thursday, November 13.

The Masters said that the results of the Premier League were felt by all parties, from professional clubs competing, academies to grassroots football.

Research shows that the economic growth of the league has also helped clubs develop facilities, staff numbers and local programs that support the lives of millions of people.

In his study, EY also explained that the 2023/2024 Premier League managed to absorb a kurang of more than 104,500 workers.

The league also donated a tax to Great Britain of 4.4 billion pounds sterling (around Rp. 96.8 trillion).

As much as 50 percent of the total tax came from footballers or around 2.1 billion pounds sterling (approximately IDR 48.4 trillion).

In response to this, the Head of the Economy of Ernst & Young Raya United Kingdom Peter Arnold said the popularity of the Premier League attracted foreign investors to invest in the country.

"The English league continues to be a success story for the British economy by generating billions in gross added value (NTB) and taxes with widespread contributions across the country and the structure of football. The popularity of this league at home and abroad creates jobs and attracts investment to the UK, as well as being a significant source of strength on the world stage," said Arnold.
