JAKARTA - President Emmanuel Macron said France would form a "joint panel" with the Palestinian Authority to draft a new constitution for the Palestinian State.
He conveyed this after receiving a Palestinian state visit Mahmoud Abbas in Paris on Tuesday.
"We decided together to form a joint committee for the consolidation of the Palestinian state," President Macron said, adding the committee would "contribut in drafting the new constitution, which President Abbas has submitted to me," as quoted by Euronews November 12.
President Abbas said he agreed "to immediately form a constitutional committee". The reform of the governing body is essential for "democratic and sovereign Palestinian states, living in peace and safe side by side with Israel", the presidential office said in a statement before the meeting.
During the meeting President Macron again stressed, "the delivery of safe and unrestricted humanitarian aid in Gaza must be ensured under the auspices of the United Nations, by fully complying with international humanitarian law."
Meanwhile, President Abbas at the meeting praised France's strong support for the Palestinian people and reiterated his gratitude to President Macron for France's acknowledgment of the Palestinian State.
