JAKARTA - A runner in his 20s suffered brain death after being hit by a truck during a marathon.

A runner in his 20s was hit by a truck during a marathon in North Chungcheong Province, leaving him brain dead.

Police and firefighters said the accident occurred around 10:08 a.m. Monday in Okcheon, Chungcheong Province, South Korea, as reported by The Korea Times on November 11.

The 25-year-old runner from the Cheongju City Hall team was hit by a 1-ton porter truck. The accident occurred when the truck driver, who was traveling in the first lane, suddenly switched to the second lane of the road serving as the running track.

The road reportedly has two lanes: one lane remains open to normal traffic and the other is reserved for marathon runners.

The victim was running at the front of the line, with a police vehicle escorting the runner about 20 to 30 meters ahead.

The North Chungcheong Sports Council said the runner suffered severe head injuries and was taken to a general hospital in Daejeon.

There, he was later declared brain dead and placed on life support. He joined the Cheongju City Hall team in August and had recently achieved strong results in several races.

The truck driver, a man in his 80s, told police he "didn't see the person."

Police said the driver was not driving under the influence. An investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.

The marathon relay, organized by the North Chungcheong Provincial Athletics Federation as part of a county-level competition, was scheduled to last three days.

Organizers said the race began after traffic control and other safety measures were completed. However, the unfortunate accident led to the event's cancellation.
