JAKARTA - A classroom at SDN Najaten 1 in Cibalong District, Garut Regency, collapsed due to the building's age and extreme weather that hit the area early Monday, November 10th.
Cibalong District Head, Galih Mawariz, confirmed the school's roof collapsed, and fortunately, it happened around 2:30 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB) when no classes were taking place.
"It happened early this morning; the entire roof collapsed," Galih said when contacted by cell phone in Garut on Monday afternoon, as reported by Antara.
He explained that the school, located in a remote area about an hour from the district office, was in poor condition.
He said this was the second such incident. A month ago, another part of the classroom collapsed due to age and extreme weather during the rainy season.
"This is actually the second time this has happened. The first time last month, a classroom collapsed, and now another part of the classroom has collapsed," Galih said.
He stated that his staff, along with members of the District Leadership Communication Forum (Forkopimcam), had directly inspected the building and confirmed that no teaching and learning activities were taking place to ensure safety.
He said the district government had reported the incident to the Garut Regency Government (Pemkab), which then conducted a direct inspection of the building by the Garut Education Office.
"We are currently awaiting the office's inspection. Hopefully, it can be repaired as soon as possible," he said.
He added that the school building, last built in 2000, has four rooms: one for the teachers and principal, and three partitioned rooms for classes for grades 1 through 6.
He said the 90 students are currently studying at home until an undetermined time or until another location for school activities can be found.
"The building has been vacated for the time being; there will be no teaching and learning activities because it has collapsed," Galih said.
