Prabowo Emphasizes He's Not Controlled by Jokowi: I'm His Best Friend, Not Afraid

JAKARTA - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto emphasized that he is not under the control of the 7th President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo (Jokowi), in implementing various government policies.

In his remarks at the inauguration of the PT Lotte Chemical Indonesia petrochemical plant in Cilegon, Banten, on Thursday, Prabowo dismissed the notion that his government's decisions were influenced by Jokowi.

"I'm not afraid of Jokowi, Prabowo. Prabowo is still controlled by Mr. Jokowi—there's no such thing," he asserted.

Prabowo considered the narrative that he is still under Jokowi's shadow to be baseless. He stated that Jokowi's presence at the factory inauguration was a form of respect for the former leader, not due to political pressure.

"I see a negative culture emerging: leaders are being treated with respect, sought after. When in power, they are praised, and after they step down, they are belittled. What kind of culture is this? We must change this," he said.

According to Prabowo, Jokowi has never entrusted him with any special interests or requests.

"Mr. Jokowi has never entrusted me with anything. Is Mr. Prabowo afraid of Mr. Jokowi? Nothing. Why would I be afraid of him? I'm a hopeng (Hokkien for good friend/old friend) with him, why would I be afraid?" he said jokingly.

Prabowo also expressed his appreciation for the achievements of Jokowi's two terms, including maintaining national economic stability and solid economic growth.

"He led for 10 years, and he's recognized internationally. After all, inflation under him was quite good, and growth was good. Come on, we have to be truthful and honest," the President said.
