JAKARTA - Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday Russia had started the development of the next generation of nuclear-powered cruise missiles while attending award ceremonies in the capital Moscow.

"The development of next-generation nuclear-powered cruise missiles has begun. Its speed will be more than three times the speed of sound, and in the future, it will even be hypersonic," President Putin said in the Kremlin, where he awarded the country the developers of the nuclear-powered Burevestnik missile and the Poseidon unmanned underwater vehicle. , reported from Anadolu November 5.

President Putin further announced that a "new generation weapon" is being developed by Russia, which he said was based on a power unit similar to that used in the Burevestnik and Poseidon.

In his speech at the award ceremony, President Putin described the development of Burevestnik as something "historic" to the Russian people and to "ensure security and strategic balance for decades to come."

"The Poseidon's work is closely related to the creation of Burevestnik. The technology and technological innovation used in both of them are unique and complementary," Putin further said, arguing that the use of new domestically produced materials collected during the work of the two weapons would help Moscow achieve breakthroughs not only in the defense sector, but also in various civilian sectors.

He stressed that Moscow poses no threat to other countries, and Russia is developing its nuclear potential like all other nuclear powers.

"This year, we will deploy the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile system for combat tests, and next year, for combat duty," added President Putin.
