JAKARTA - Turkish police on Thursday, May 18, launched a simultaneous operation against suspected ISIS members in the city of Istanbul and detained at least 18 foreigners, according to local media reports.

Several teams of the Istanbul Police Department's Counter-Terrorism Unit searched 20 homes in the city to arrest the suspects, who allegedly had links to ISIS, the Hurriyet daily reported.

The daily said one of the houses searched was located about 500 meters from the U.S. Consulate General in sariter district on the European side. However, the nationality of those arrested is still unknown.

Many organizational documents as well as digital material were seized during the search at the address.

Since 2015 the ISIS group has been accused of masterminding a string of deadly attacks in Turkey. Turkey's counter-terrorism unit often launches operations against ISIS members in the country.
