JAKARTA - Member of Commission VIII DPR RI Selly Andrianygana highlighted the incident of the collapse of a girls' dormitory building at the Salafiyah Syafi'iyah Islamic Boarding School (Ponpes) Syafiyah Sheikh Abdul Qodir Jailani, Situbondo, East Java, which killed a female student and injured 11 others.

Selly urged the Pesantren Development Arrangement and Supervision Task Force that has been formed by the government to work optimally, to ensure that every construction or renovation of the santri dormitory meets building safety standards.

"This task force is important to ensure that no more Islamic boarding schools are established without careful safety calculations. The central and regional governments must work together to monitor all Islamic boarding schools, especially those with dormitories," Selly told reporters, Friday, October 31.

The politician from the West Java VIII electoral district hopes that the newly formed Directorate General of Islamic Boarding Schools (Ditjen Pesantren) of the Ministry of Religion can play an active and strategic role in monitoring the physical development of pesantren.

"The Directorate General of Islamic Boarding Schools is not only responsible for the aspects of education and institutions, but must also have a coordinating function for the feasibility of Islamic boarding school facilities and infrastructure, in collaboration with local governments and technical institutions such as the PUPR Construction Services Center," he explained.

Selly also encouraged the preparation of safety standards and certification of Islamic boarding schools nationally as guidelines for all Islamic boarding schools. According to him, the guidelines must cover aspects of planning, construction, and maintenance of the dormitory building.

"There should be no tolerance for safety violations that could threaten the lives of students and teachers," he said.

In addition, he asked the National Professional Certification Agency (BNSP) to prepare competent experts and supervisors of pesantren buildings. Meanwhile, the district/city permit and PUPR offices were asked to strengthen building inspections and coordinate with the Ministry of Religion and the Ministry of Home Affairs.

"This cross-sector coordination is very important so that no more Islamic boarding schools stand without adequate technical supervision," said Selly.

He emphasized that the Directorate General of Islamic Boarding Schools must be the main driving force in ensuring that all pesantren have a safe, feasible infrastructure and are in accordance with national safety standards.

"Tragedy like this should not continue to repeat itself, because it involves the lives of the next generation of the nation," he concluded.

Previously, the women's boarding school building Ponpes Salafiyah Syafiyah Syekh Abdul Qodir Jailani in Blimbing Village, Besuki District, Situbondo, collapsed in the early hours of Wednesday (29/10) at around 00.30 WIB.

The Situbondo Police noted that 12 female students were victims, including one person who died.

This incident adds to the long list of similar tragedies, after the collapse of a three-story building in the Musala Al Khoziny, Sidoarjo, last September which claimed dozens of lives.
