JAKARTA - Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono said the East Asian Summit (EAS) is a forum that provides space for dialogue, a place where great and medium forces unite to move forward together.
This was conveyed in "20th East Asia Summit" in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Monday. In a national statement representing President Prabowo Subianto, Foreign Minister Sugiono emphasized the importance of dialogue, cooperation, and healthy competition as the basis for peace and progress amid increasingly complex global dynamics.
"Changes occur at speeds that often exceed our adaptation capacity, while competition continues to redefine the way countries interact with each other," Foreign Minister Sugiono said in his speech, launching a statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Tuesday, October 28.
"However, in the midst of this uncertainty, we also see new opportunities for dialogue, innovation, cooperation and collaboration," he continued.
"If guided by common sense, competition can be a powerful engine of progress. But if left unchecked, competition is at risk of turning into a confrontation that cannot be borne by the world. That's why the East Asian Summit is important," he said, citing President Prabowo at the ASEAN Plus Three Summit.
Foreign Minister Sugiono further emphasized the important role of EAS as a forum for constructive dialogue by leaders to jointly strengthen regional trust and stability.
"As a forum led by leaders, the East Asian Summit provides the necessary space for constructive dialogue, even in the most difficult times," explained Foreign Minister Sugiono.
"Here, great and medium-sized forces unite, not to put pressure on each other, but to move forward together," he said.
On this occasion, Foreign Minister Sugiono also reiterated ASEAN's centrality as a principle as well as a shared responsibility, by emphasizing the need to strengthen ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) and deepen maritime and economic cooperation within the framework of EAS.
Not to be missed at the summit this time, the Indonesian Foreign Minister highlighted the global situation marked by conflict, especially Palestine, and called for a sincere joint effort to realize peace.
He reiterated the principles held firmly by Indonesia, "a thousand friends too few, one opponent too many", emphasized that EAS must continue to be a forum that upholds dialogue, cooperation, and mutual respect for the creation of regional and global peace.
