The Directorate General of Corrections (Ditjenpas) of the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections ensured that the Gunung Sitoli Penitentiary (Lapas), North Sumatra (North Sumatra), had been conducive after a riot occurred on Wednesday, October 22.

Head of the North Sumatra Ditjenpas Regional Office, Yudi Suseno, said that his party had communicated and investigated the incident. The recovery of the condition of the Gunung Sitoli Prison is also in collaboration with the TNI.

"Alhamdulillah, at this time the conditions are conducive, we continue to take steps so that this incident does not happen again so that coaching and security can run well," said Yudi as the official statement from the Directorate General of Social Affairs was received in Jakarta, Friday, as reported by Antara.

He explained that the riots allegedly occurred because of the actions of the head of the Gunung Sitoli Prison against one of the inmates who was deemed to have violated the rules.

The inmates gave food to the occupants of the disciplined room. This action is not in accordance with existing regulations. The reason is, food for the inmates in the disciplinary room can only be prepared by the prison.

Knowing this, the head of the prison is suspected of taking action against the inmates who were injured.

"For the inmates who were injured because the incident had been treated, we have also informed their families. The inmates will be released in November, based on a conditional release decree from the Directorate General of Social Affairs," said Yudi.

Meanwhile, the head of Gunung Sitoli Prison has been withdrawn to the regional office. Therefore, the prison is now temporarily led by the Correctional Officer of the North Sumatra Ditjenpas Eben Haezer Dipari.

"Based on the results of a temporary investigation by the Directorate General of Social Affairs, it will be continued with an examination of the code of ethics and discipline for Kalapas and parties deemed involved," added Yudi.

He admitted that the Gunung Sitoli Prison needed special treatment because it often received residents who were assisted in moving from other prisons in the North Sumatra region, some of whom were also problematic in previous prisons.

Nevertheless, Yudi emphasized that coaching, security, and services to fulfill the rights of the inmates are a priority for the Regional Office of the North Sumatra Ditjenpas.

"As the Minister of Immigration and Corrections and the Director General of Corrections always reminds us, we will not tolerate all types of violence, either committed by officers or inmates," he said.
