JAKARTA - Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was sentenced to five years in prison on charges of "criminal conspiracy" in a case involving his Lib funding for his campaign in the 2007 presidential election.
Sarkozy arrived at La Sante Prison in Paris, on Tuesday (21/10), making him the first former French president to be officially jailed, according to television station BFM TV.
Reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, more than 100 people gathered near his residence to show support, while Sarkozy's lawyer, Christophe Ingrain, told BFM TV the request for release would be submitted very quickly.
Ingrain also confirmed Sarkozy is likely to be in detention for three weeks to one month before the appeals court makes a decision.
Before leaving his home, Sarkozy shared the last message via social media platform X, saying he promised to continue to denounce what he called a "trial scandal."
"I will continue to criticize this judicial scandal, the ordeal I have been through for more than ten years. This is an illegal funding case without any funding whatsoever! This long investigation began based on documents whose fakeness is now proven," he wrote.
Sarkozy emphasized that he did not ask for special treatment or relief.
This morning I felt deep sadness for France, which has been humiliated by revenge that has increased hatred to an unrivaled level. I have no doubt. The truth will win. However, how high the price should be, "he added.
