JAKARTA - Slovak court sentenced a man who shot Prime Minister Robert Fico to injury last year with a sentence of 21 years in prison. The perpetrator was found guilty of a criminal act of terrorism

Reported by Reuters, Tuesday, October 21, Juraj Cindula (72) shot Fico five times from a distance of more than one meter when the prime minister greeted the public in the city of Handlova, central Slovakia, in May 2024.

The Special Criminal Court's decision in the city of Banska Bystrica closed the trial which began in July.

The verdict can be appealed to the country's Supreme Court.

Fico was beaten four times and suffered serious injuries to his stomach, as well as injuries to his hips, hands, and legs. He first appeared in public in July last year, months after the attack.

Sentula said he wanted to hurt, but did not kill Fico, because he wanted to stop him from continuing his policies deemed detrimental to Slovakian freedom and culture.
