Reject Oil And Gas Exploration On Small Island Kangean, IKSS Urges Government To Intervene

Jakarta Ikatan Santri Alumni Salafiyah Syafiyah (IKSS) Rayon Kangean urged the government to cancel all oil and gas exploration plan activities carried out by a company on Kangean Island. They assess that the seismic survey conducted by the company for oil and gas exploration does not benefit the community, it even has the potential to have a large social and environmental impact.

"Demanding SKK Migas, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, and Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries to evaluate, review, and cancel the entire oil and gas exploration and exploitation process on Kangean Island," said IKSS Chairman Rayon Kangean, Mahmudi, in a press statement, Friday (17/10/2025).

Mahmudi emphasized that as an organization that focuses on community service, service and empowerment, IKSS will continue to voice rejection of the project. He said the seismic survey conducted by KEI in Kangean waters had caused residents' unrest.

Kangean Island is classified as a small island whose ecosystem is very vulnerable. Exploration in this region clearly threatens social life and the community," he said.

IKSS asked the central, provincial and district governments to immediately stop all oil and gas exploration and exploitation plans on the island which only consists of the two sub-districts.

"We urge President Prabowo Subianto, Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa, and Regent Ahmad Fauzi Wongsojudo to intervene to stop exploration on Kangean Island," he explained.

Mahmudi added, if these demands are ignored, the wave of resistance from the community will continue to expand. "The company still forces to survey several locations in Kangean waters. This makes people even more angry," he said.

"IKSS also asks the government and companies to take responsibility to restore the social conditions of the people who are now not conducive. 'Recover people's lives as before' peaceful, prosperous, and prosperous,' concluded Mahmudi.
