JAKARTA - The United Nations is ready to assist in implementing a possible peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine. US President Donald Trump is now trying to mediate with the leaders of Russia and Ukraine.
"Of course, we are ready to assist in implementing the agreement that will lead to a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, in accordance with international law, in accordance with relevant resolutions," said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric.
He reiterated the position of the United Nations in favor of peace but declined to comment on the upcoming summit between president Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in Budapest.
On Thursday, Putin and Trump had a telephone conversation and agreed to meet in Budapest.
Trump proposed Budapest as a potential location for Russia-US summit and Putin supports the idea, said Russia's presidential adviser, Yury Ushakov.
On Friday, Trump hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Ukraine previously asked the US to supply the Tomahawk missile.
Putin told Trump on Thursday that it was possible the supply of the Tomahawk missile to Kiev would not change the situation on the front lines, but would otherwise damage Russia-US relations, the Kremlin said.
