JAKARTA - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu canceled attending the summit (KTT) ending the Gaza war in Egypt.

Information on Netanyahu's absence was conveyed by his office, after Cairo previously announced that the Israeli Prime Minister would participate.

In a statement, Netanyahu's office said he was invited by US President Donald Trump to take part in a meeting of world leaders in Sharm el-Sheikh, but rejected him "because of his close time to the start of the holiday (Yahudi)."

"The Prime Minister thanked President Trump for his invitation and for his efforts to expand the circle of peace through power," the statement said.

An Egyptian presidential spokesman previously said Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Netanyahu were expected to attend the summit to strengthen the agreement to end the war in Gaza and reaffirm the commitments of the two sides.

The spokesman also said Trump and Netanyahu had spoken by telephone with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi while they were in Israel on Monday.
