The West Aceh Resort Police confirmed the human skeleton found in the construction excavation at the Cut Nyak Dhien Meulaboh Regional General Hospital Complex (RSUD), allegedly a member of the National Police who was victims of the 2004 tsunami disaster.
"It is strongly suspected that the skeleton is a 2004 Aceh tsunami victim, who may have previously been evacuated and temporarily buried in the area around the hospital," said Head of Criminal Investigation Unit AKP Roby Afrizal to reporters quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, October 7.
The skeleton was previously discovered on Monday (6/10) while workers were digging the ground for the construction of a new room foundation around the hospital, and found objects suspected of being human bones at a depth of about two meters.
AKP Roby Afrizal said that apart from the skeleton, officers also found several items that allegedly belonged to the victim, including police PDL pants, Polri belt, and a black t-shirt that reads Police.
These items are now being secured as supporting materials in the process of further identification.
"To confirm the identity of the victim, we will continue to carry out further examination and coordination with related parties, including the management of Cut Nyak Dhien Hospital and the Health Office," he said.
The management of the Cut Nyak Dhien Meulaboh Hospital, West Aceh also plans to collect and bury the skeleton in a more appropriate place, after the police investigation process is complete.
