MALUKU - The Maluku Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) through Resort Bula officers thwarted an attempt to smuggle five Perkici Pelangi (Trichoglossus hadodus) birds from a passenger on the Nusantara 80 Belt Ship at the Bula Sea Port, East Seram Regency (SBT).

"This finding began when officers suspected a small hole box carried by passengers on the Bula 'Gorom route," said the Forestry Police (Polhut) of the Maluku BKSDA, Arga Christyan in Ambon, Antara, Monday, October 6.

After the inspection, officers found five Rainbow Perkici Birds in the box.

Based on the results of coordination with the Water and Air Police Unit (Polairud) of Bula City, it is known that the birds came from Pufa Village and are planned to be taken out of the area as souvenirs.

Bula Resort officers then rescued the animal and provided guidance to its owner regarding the rules for protecting wildlife.

"The five birds are now in good health and secured at the Bula Resort Office for further processing," said Arga.

The Maluku BKSDA reminded the public not to trade or maintain protected wildlife. In addition to violating the law, this action also threatens the preservation of species in their natural habitat.

According to Law Number 5 of 1990 concerning Conservation of Biological Natural Resources and their Ecosystems, everyone who deliberately catches, injures, kills, keeps, owns, maintains, transports, or trades protected animals can be sentenced to a maximum imprisonment of five years and a maximum fine of Rp. 100 million.

The BKSDA assesses that the practice of smuggling animals is still common in coastal and archipelagic areas, especially ahead of the holiday season when shipping activities increase. For this reason, supervision at the main port will be tightened with law enforcement officials, through patrols and outreach to the public.

Langkah ini diharapkan dapat menekan praktik perdagangan satwa liar sekaligus meningkatkan kesadaran publik untuk menjaga keseimbangan ekosistem dan melindungi kekayaan hayati Indonesia.

This step is expected to suppress the practice of wildlife trade while increasing public awareness to maintain ecosystem balance and protect Indonesia's biological wealth.
