JAKARTA - Former Japanese Minister of Economic Security, Sanae Takaichi has been legally appointed as General Chair (Ketum) of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).
Citing Reuters, Takaichi won the highest vote in the election for the general chairman of Japan's ruling party at an internal party meeting today, Saturday, October 4 local time.
One of the close people to the late Prime Minister (PM) Shinzo Abe has a high chance of becoming the next PM after being inaugurated as Chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party.
He is expected to replace PM Shigeru Ishiba, who resigned last month and officially resigned after his party, the Liberal Democratic Party, had received a new chairman.
The election for the Japanese PM to replace Ishiba in parliament is expected to be held on October 15.
In the election for the General Chair of the Liberal Democratic Party, Takaichi defeated four other candidates including Agriculture Minister Shinjiro Koizumi's strong candidate, son of former PM Junichiro Koizumi.
The election was fierce after none of the five candidates won the majority in the first round of the vote.
