U.N. Can't Be Controlled Because Of U.S. Pressure, Indonesia Can Gather Muslim Countries To Help Palestine

JAKARTA - The international attitude through the United Nations has not offered a short- and long-term solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Chairman of the Bilateral Cooperation Group (GKSB) of the Indonesian and Palestinian parliaments, Syahrul Aidi Maazat, considers Indonesia as the world's largest Muslim country has a large role to garner international support both politically, economically and even humanitarian aid.

According to him, Israel should be pressured from all sides, not just hope at the United Nations.

"Palestine is very hopeful about Indonesia's role in the international world, especially when it comes to politics. If the U.N. resolution cannot be controlled because of strong United States pressure, Indonesia can play a role beyond that," Syahrul told reporters Monday, May 17.

For example, he said, in G-20 countries, OIC, ASEAN or bilateral relations with Muslim countries or countries concerned with conditions in Palestine.

Members of Commission V of the House of Representatives asserted that, in addition to short-term politics, Indonesia can encourage humanitarian assistance from the international community for post-conflict mitigation.

Moreover, he said, Palestine desperately needs material and immaterial assistance. The West Bank, like today's large prison that Israel is besieged from all sides.

"Palestine is very difficult at the moment. Indonesia can play a role by raising humanitarian aid from Muslim countries or donor countries. This assistance is used for post-conflict improvement or during conflicts," explained Syahrul.

Syahrul suggested that the government could allocate a special budget to Palestine as a concrete action from Indonesia.
