JAKARTA - Russian Presidential Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Thursday the initiative to stop the development of biological weapons proposed by United States President Donald Trump was brilliant.

"The initiative itself is brilliant," Peskov said at a press conference responding to a related question from a TASS correspondent, as quoted September 25.

The Kremlin spokesman noted that Russia is ready to take part in the process of global rejection of biological weapons. However, President Trump's initiative must be documented.

"Undeniably, this is a very important proposal and should be welcomed. Of course, the Russian side is ready to participate in the global rejection of this biological weapon," he said, stressing Moscow supports President Trump's initiative.

"However, it would be better if documented in a certain way, once again, at an international level," added Peskov.

Earlier, President Trump urged an end to the development of biological weapons and will lead the effort, while speaking at the UN's 80th General Assembly Debat on Tuesday.

"I also call on every country to join us in ending the development of biological weapons forever," said President Trump, as reported by The Washington Times.

"And biological weapons are terrible, and nuclear is even more terrible, and we are incorporating nuclear. We want to stop the development of nuclear weapons," he said.

President Trump added, "I see weapons that are so powerful that we will never be able to use them. If we use them, the world may really be coming to an end. There will be no United Nations to talk about. Nothing will happen."

The Republican politician said his government would lead international efforts to enforce the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), which will hold meetings with world leaders and start an artificial intelligence verification system.

The BWC, which consists of 189 countries and comes into effect in 1975, prohibits the development, production, acquisition, transfer, hoarding, and use of biological weapons, according to the UN website.
