Nigerian Police Arrest 6 Perpetrators Of Attack That Killed 3 Officers

JAKARTA - Nigerian police have arrested six people in connection with the deadly attack on a police tactical team in Benue State that killed three officers and seven others missing.

The attack took place on Friday in the Agu Center, Katsina-Ala/Ukum Regional Government Region, where armed herders and local militias allegedly opened fire on police units deployed to the region.

A police spokesman said local police were leading search and rescue operations for the missing officers, while the suspects were still being held.

As reported by Reuters on Monday, September 22, Nigerian Police Inspector General Kayode Egbetokun called the attack "cruel, groundless, and an insult to the people in the state of Benue."

Local officials said the attackers also destroyed two police vehicles and stole several motorbikes.

Clashes between herders and the agricultural community often occur in the Nigerian Middle Belt, where land disputes and grazing routes have escalated to deadly violence.

Police said additional tactical units had been deployed to the area to restore order and arrest those responsible.
