JAKARTA Member of Commission I DPR, Syamsu Rizal, responded to the beating case by a member of the TNI, Letda FA against online motorcycle taxi driver Teguh Sukma Akbar in Pontianak, West Kalimantan. Rizal asked the TNI to take firm action against members who committed violence.
Rizal regretted the viral video showing the violence of soldiers against civil society who were working. According to him, the incident hurt public trust in the TNI institution.
"Every TNI soldier should be able to control himself, especially when on the road or in public spaces. They are part of a state defense institution that should set an example of discipline and calm, not showing abusive behavior," said Syamsu Rizal in Jakarta, Monday, September 22.
The man who is familiarly called Dengan Ical emphasized that the TNI must take firm action against soldiers who commit violence. According to him, enforcement of discipline and sanctions is clearly a form of institutional responsibility as well as a way to maintain the dignity of the TNI in the eyes of the people.
Strict sanctions need to be imposed so that it becomes a deterrent effect, not only for the perpetrators, but also as a lesson for all other soldiers. If left unchecked, this action has the potential to damage the image of the TNI which has been trusted by the people," he said.
Deng Ical also emphasized that the TNI has a moral obligation to continue to maintain harmonious relations with the community. Soldiers, according to him, must always prioritize professional attitudes, be disciplined, and be able to withstand emotions in any condition.
The people are strategic partners of the TNI. Soldiers should not take this relationship lightly. Violence against the people will only create distance and damage public trust. Therefore, I encourage this case to be handled seriously, transparently, and fairly," he said.
He hopes that this incident in Pontianak can be a momentum for the TNI to strengthen soldiers' mental and disciplined development. That way, every member of the TNI is really present as a protector of the people and is no longer involved in violent practices in the field.
"However, TNI soldiers are also human beings who need to be forgiven if they are wrong. But soldiers are symbols of a country that has a heavier responsibility than other Indonesian citizens, the same as public officials. So personal resilience must be stronger," concluded Syamsu Rizal.
