JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) confirmed that the earthquake that rocked the Sukabumi-Bogor area on September 20, 2025 was triggered by shallow active fault activity with a sliding mechanism (strike-slip fault).
Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, said the main earthquake with a magnitude of 4.0 occurred on Saturday, September 20 at around 23.47 WIB at a depth of seven kilometers on land, precisely in Kabandungan District, Sukabumi Regency, West Java.
"Based on the earthquake waves recorded by the DBJI Darmaga and CBJI Citeko seismic sensors, this earthquake is clearly a tectonic earthquake, not a volcanic earthquake," he said in Jakarta, Monday, September 22.
BMKG noted that the earthquake was felt by residents in Kalapanunggal and Kabandungan with intensity III'IV MMI, in Pamijahan and Leuwiliang with intensity III MMI, in Bogor II'II MMI, as well as in Palabuhanratu and Depok with intensity II MMI.
The earthquake that occurred caused minor damage to five houses in Cipeuteuy Village, Kabandungan District, which was inhabited by about 20 people. There were no reports of casualties or injuries in this incident.
Building damage occurred due to a combination of shallow earthquake hypocenters, soft soil conditions in affected locations, as well as building structures for residents who had not met earthquake-resistant standards.
BMKG also noted that 39 aftershocks had occurred after the main earthquake, with the largest magnitude M3.8 and the smallest M1.9. Of that number, five of them were felt by the community. Daryono added that the destructive earthquake in this area was not the first time this had happened.
