JAKARTA - European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that the European Union must seek trade agreements with countries such as India to reduce dependence.
The higher US import rate prompted the bloc to diversify its relationship.
"We want to reach an agreement with India this year," von der Leyen told a conference with German business leaders.
He said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured him of his commitment to this purpose by phone call on Wednesday.
"We are negotiating with South Africa, Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, and other countries," said von der Leyen.
