JAKARTA - Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives considers the discourse of limiting one social media account which is currently being studied by the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi), including limiting cell phone numbers. The DPR considers that the misuse of telephone numbers for digital fraud (scamming) that is mushrooming in the country must be taken seriously.

"In principle, we want to reduce anonymity in the digital world, so that usernames and identities can be clearly visible on social media and other platforms. This is important so that no party abuses anonymity to commit acts that violate the law or harm others," Sukamta told reporters, Thursday, September 18.

Sukamta assessed that the policy of limiting telephone numbers through factual verification by using the original identity when registration can be implemented, as long as it still considers the diversity of conditions in the community in the field.

Nevertheless, he reminded that the policy should not burden people who are still experiencing difficulties. For example, in buying new devices needed for the verification process.

"There used to be a government mind for that. But for some people who might still have difficulty buying a new cellphone, that's what has to be a solution, don't force it," said Sukamta.

Including the discourse on social media restrictions with a system of 'one citizen, one account', Sukamta views, this needs to be considered as a way to suppress anonymity which is often an opening for hate speech practices and criminal acts in cyberspace.

"In principle, there is no anonymity. So that there is a bright name and identity in the digital world, social media or something else. So that no one has a criminal motive or something prohibited from law hiding behind anonymity. That's the point," explained Sukamta.

In addition, according to him, the one-person account system can reduce negative anonymity numbers. Even so, Sukamta assessed, the policy discourse needs to be discussed further.

"Is it by one person's account, or in another way what is important is so that people are required to use their real identity. So if that's what is taken, it's one very good way," concluded the legislator from the Special Region of Yogyakarta.
