DENPASAR - Bali River Basin Center (BWS) Penida, Ministry of Public Works (PU) is preparing to normalize rivers in Bali to prevent large floods from happening again.

Head of BWS Bali Penida Gunawan Suntoro in Denpasar, Bali, Wednesday, said the Governor of Bali had submitted a request for normalization in six main rivers.

The request has received a positive response from the Minister of Public Works and is just waiting for the budget.

"There are about six such as Tukad Badung, Tukad Mati, Tukad Ayung, and Tukad Unda. We identify points that are really urgent to normalize, one of which is in the Muara Reservoir (Tukad Badung flow) there is a large sedimentation there," he said, Wednesday, September 17.

BWS sees the thickness that occurs at the estuary of Tukad Badung reaching 270 thousand cubic meters, so that the normalization fee alone can reach IDR 30 billion.

"We are having a bit of trouble if we have to at once, maybe it will be gradual and this is the medium term that is not enough to do in a year, at least the minister is very intense to start next year," said Gunawan.

For the time being, before river normalization, BWS Bali Penida will start anticipating the disaster emergency response period by repairing embankments that were broken due to large floods on Wednesday (10/9/2025) using the existing disaster budget.

Gunawan said the Minister of Public Works paid great attention to river infrastructure in Bali, so his party was asked to identify large rivers that were a priority for improvement.

Throughout Tukad Badung as one of the rivers that overflowed during the flood in Denpasar, the results of the study showed that the sedimentation was not very large, but at the estuary it was the concern.

Likewise, sedimentation in Tukad Ayung and Tukad Mati, as well as Tukad Unda, which embankments need to be made.

"Indeed, if you look at the heavy rain, this is actually if (rain) is normal, it is not necessary (normalization) but because we have seen that the rainfall is quite large, special efforts are needed for handling there," said Gunawan.

BWS Bali Penida does not ensure river normalization is the only step to prevent large flooding from happening again, but with the dredging it means the government has tried to prevent it from happening again.

"Of course, our business is based on analysis, our identification is indeed needed, but if it is confirmed, we are human, we are only trying our best based on analysis," he said.
