JAKARTA - Sushila Karki, Sunday (14/9) officially serves as Nepal's interim prime minister with the promise of investigating violent acts in demonstrations led by young people recently and holding elections as part of the roadmap of his government.
Karki, Nepal's first female prime minister, who previously served as chairman of the grand court, was sworn in on Friday (12/9) by President Ramchandra Paudel following mass pressure after the fall of the elected government led by KP Sharma Oli.
Karki began carrying out official duties from the Ministry of Home Affairs Building in Singha Durbar because the prime minister's office was previously burned during a protest.
Speaking to the media after taking over, Karki called violence in the demonstration "Gen Z" a criminal act against the state.
He emphasized that the government would investigate the destruction of parliament buildings, attorney generals, prime minister's offices, business centers, and personal property.
Cabinet Secretary Eknarayan Aryal said the government acknowledged those killed in the 'Gen Z' movement as martyrs and the families of the victims would receive compensation.
He added that the hospital had also been instructed to provide free treatment for the injured.
Meanwhile, the families of a number of victims who died stated that they refused to accept the bodies of their relatives until the demands were met.
