JAKARTA - Rebels of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) with machetes and firearms killed more than 50 civilians at a funeral ceremony in eastern Congo.
This is the latest major attack by a group affiliated with ISIS.
The ADF attack took place Monday night in the city of Ntoyo in the Lubero area, North Kivu province, said Macaire Sivikunula, a local administrator.
"I can confirm the death toll while as many as 50 people. The victims were shocked when the mourning ceremony in Ntoyo Village was around 21.00 p.m., and most of them were killed with machetes," he said.
The ADF originated in an uprising in Uganda, but has been based in a neighboring Congo since the late 1990s, and is recognized by the Islamic State militant group as its affiliate.
A series of recent ADF attacks have exacerbated insecurity in eastern Congo, a mineral-rich region where Rwanda-backed M23 rebels launched a major attack earlier this year, prompting US President Donald Trump's administration to try to mediate peace.
Last month, ADF killed more than 50 civilians in several attacks, while an ADF attack in July at a church killed 38 people.
