JAYAPURA - Jayapura Search and Rescue Office (SAR) found the victim drowned due to being struck by lightning while fishing in Lake Sentani, precisely in Kampung Ifar Besar, last Saturday.

Head of the Jayapura SAR Office Anton Sucipto said the victim, Edison Yoku (43), was fishing by boat when lightning struck during heavy rain.

"Based on witness testimony, at around 16.00 WIT, the victim was struck and then fell from the boat and immediately sank," Anton said in his release, Antara, Sunday, September 7.

The victim's family had tried to search, but to no avail. They then reported the incident to the Jayapura SAR Office. The SAR team moved quickly to carry water SAR equipment and started the search since Saturday afternoon. However, the dive effort was stopped due to dark conditions.

The search continued on Sunday morning involving ten personnel divided into three teams, consisting of SAR officers, Polair, and the local community.

"Search efforts finally paid off. The victim was found dead at around 15:10 WIT at the location where the victim fell," said Anton.

Edison Yoku's body was then evacuated ashore and handed over to the family. With the discovery of the victim, the SAR operation was officially closed.
