Trump Changes The Name Of The Department Of Defense To The Department Of War, Here's The Reason

JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to change the name of the Department of Defense to the Department of War.

The department's official name change will require Congress to act, but the order is expected to state the new name can be used in official correspondence, ceremonial context, and non-state documents.

The Minister of Defense can also use the title of Minister of War under the order.

"I think it's a much more appropriate name, especially given the current conditions of the world. We have the strongest military in the world. We have the greatest equipment in the world. We have the greatest equipment producer so far. No one can match it," Trump said in the Oval Room with Defense Minister Pete Hegseth. reported by ABC News, Saturday, September 6.

Hegseth said the name change was aimed at "recovering the ethos of soldiers" in the military.

Trump has signaled the change for months, stating he is not sure the name "Deepartment of Defense" is strong enough.

"We won World War First, we won World War Two, we won everything before and after. Then we decided to wake up the community and change the name to the Department of Defense. So, we will become the Department of War," Trump said.

Trump told reporters he felt he did not need Congressional approval to change the name.

"I don't know, but we will find out. But I'm not sure they should," he said on Friday.

When asked how much the change cost, Trump did not provide an estimated cost.

"We know how to change brand image without having to overdo it. We don't need to repaint mountains or anything like that. We're not going to do it in the most expensive way -- we're going to start changing stationery when the time comes and a lot like that," Trump said.
