Unpass Police Claims No Intervention To Campus And Students

JAKARTA - Bandung Pasundan University (Unpas) said there was no excessive intervention from the police on Monday night, September 1, which stated that there was an attack by the police on the Unpas and Unisba campus in Tamansari Bandung.

"We do not see any excessive intervention from the security forces against campuses and students," said Vice Chancellor III of Unpas Dr M Budiana, reading out a statement from the Unpas Chancellor Prof. Azhar Affandi in Bandung, Tuesday, which was confiscated by Antara.

However, Unpas acknowledged that there were security efforts by the police along Jalan Tamansari which were allegedly a group that had gathered, and not from the Unpas.

"It is true that there are efforts to secure the police along Tamansari Street, and it is suspected that many groups are not Unpas students. We are concerned about this condition and hope that the situation can return to normal," said the Unpas Chancellor.

Previously, the West Java Regional Police (West Java Police) suspected that the riots that occurred around the Bandung Islamic University (Unisba), on Monday (1/9) night, had been planned by a group of masses.

West Java Police Chief Inspector General Pol Rudi Setiawan said the mass action was designed to lure the authorities into the campus area. However, the police made sure not to attack the campus.

"We analyzed this already designed, it was planned that we were provoked to attack the campus, but thank God we didn't," said Rudi.

The Kapolda said the masses numbered around 150 to 200 people gathered on Tamansari Street by blocking roads, dressed all black, covering faces, and carrying stones, iron, and wood.

Meanwhile, the Head of Public Relations of the West Java Police, Kombes Pol. Hendra Rochmawan, revealed that the tear gas shot that occurred around Jalan Tamansari was triggered by a Molotov cocktail attack from a group of people dressed in black suspected of being a group of drugs.

Hendra explained that the group then carried out further provocations by throwing Molotov cocktails from inside the campus at officers and vehicles, including a Brimob rantis car. Due to this condition, officers fired tear gas into the highway.
